…”I’m writing as I sit on the beach of  Candolim, a few kilometers north of the capital, Panjim. I’m barricaded in one of the few shacks which are still there, with their poor roofs made of bamboo and palm leaves. All the other shacks that once stretched along the beach from Calangute to Fort Aguada have been conquered or destroyed by the enemy troops, which resorted to every available means to wear out the resistance of the beach people. Banished around   the last rampart in the strip that goes down from Dona Florina to Casa di Mello, a few dozens die-hards have decided to fight to the last, determined not to give an inch, at the risk to make the ultimate sacrifice…
